FAQs about Health Insurance

The waiting periods in a health insurance policy refer to the time that must elapse from the date you sign up for your policy until you can make use of certain coverage.

It should be said that most of the cover included in the insurance policy does not have this condition and you can make use of them from the first day: consultations, X-rays, clinical analyses, specialities, 24-hour medical assistance, hospital emergencies...

Others do have waiting periods, such as, for example, surgical interventions and admissions, oncological treatments, high-tech diagnostic tests or coverage related to pregnancy, such as hospitalisation for childbirth, assisted reproduction or postpartum care.

There are different types of health insurance and we can distinguish between them based on these three concepts: co-payment, hospitalisation and reimbursement.

Insurance with or without co-payment

Insurance with co-payment: every time you make use of certain coverage or have a medical consultation with a specialist, you will have to assume part of the cost of that service. In general, this amount to be paid is usually not very high, as you share it with the insurer. In exchange, the presence of co-payments will make the fixed annual price of your insurance cheaper. This is ideal if you rarely visit the doctor, but still want all the advantages of private medicine at a more affordable price. What are our health insurance policies with co-payment? Insurance with no co-payment: you only pay the fixed annual premium for your insurance, no matter how many times you go to the doctor or how much you use the cover. This option is perfect if you prefer to pay a little more for your insurance in exchange for knowing that it will be the insurer who assumes 100% of the cost of the services beforehand.

Health insurance with or without hospitalisation

Insurance with hospitalisation: it includes medical, surgical, maternity, paediatric admissions... The insurer assumes the costs of such admissions, such as operating theatre expenses, anaesthesia, medication... And in addition, whenever possible, the admission is carried out in a single room with a bed for the companion.
Insurance without hospitalisation: cheaper option than the previous one, but with coverage focused only on direct access to consultations, treatments and diagnostic tests. Our health insurance policy without hospitalisation is Médica.

Health insurance with or without reimbursement

Medical insurance with reimbursement: when you go to a professional who is not on the Company's Medical team, the insurance reimburses you up to 90% of the cost of that specialist's service.
Health insurance without reimbursement: you assume the totality of the expenses in the event that you decide to go to a specialist outside the Medical List of the insurer. However, it should be noted that this is not common, as for example in the case of Caser Expat Insurance, you have more than 45,000 specialists to choose from included in the Medical List. The insurances without reimbursement are cheaper compared to those that do include reimbursement.
