Under what circumstances can I change the policyholder?

Given the essential role of the policyholder in determining both the validity and the accrued history of an insurance policy, changes to the policyholder are only permitted in a limited number of specific situations. These include, for example, the death of the policyholder or the cessation of activity of the company listed as such. In all other cases, the policy must be cancelled and a new one taken out.

The policyholder of a car insurance policy is the person who takes the initiative to arrange motor insurance, or any other type of insurance, either for their own protection or for that of assets they own, such as a vehicle. The policyholder may also designate another person of their choice as the insured party.

This person is also responsible for paying the insurance premium agreed with the insurer.

Therefore, the policyholder is the individual or entity in whose name the car insurance policy is registered, although this may not necessarily coincide with the person named as the insured driver.

Owing to the importance of this role within an insurance contract, a change of policyholder is only permitted in the cases outlined below. Otherwise, the policy must be cancelled and a new insurance contract arranged.

When the policyholder is a natural person

In the event of the policyholder’s death, provided they are replaced by another person who was already listed on the policy and had been so for a considerable period of time, thereby allowing the accumulated no-claims or loyalty bonus to be retained.

When the policyholder is a legal entity

•    When the company ceases trading and another entity intends to assume responsibility as the policyholder.
•    In cases where the person named as the declared driver or insured party decides to take direct ownership of the policy, thus becoming the policyholder.
